Children's Charity - Families for Children Zambia

We believe that it's important to give something back, both to the local community and to charitable projects further afield. This is why we're committed to giving a portion of our profits every year to our chosen charity - Families for Children Zambia (FFCZ).

Families For Children Zambia does exceptional life-changing work by supporting families and vulnerable children in Zambia, many of whom are affected by HIV and AIDS. All the charity's projects are funded solely by donations.

FFCZ is committed to providing help to the villages and communities in Zambia that need it most, and with very low administration costs, thanks to its band of dedicated volunteers, the charity makes sure that every penny possible goes to help the people of Zambia.

Why do we sponsor FFCZ?

There are three main reasons why we chose Families For Children Zambia. Firstly, many charities have high overheads, so need to spend a significant amount of the money that's donated to them on administration costs. FFCZ is run entirely by volunteers so most of the money that the charity raises goes to the people that they are trying to help.

Secondly, many charities send food and goods that are sourced outside of the economy that they are trying to help to needy areas, so need to pay shipping costs. When charities send aid in this way, there is also a chance that the food or goods will get looted in transit.

FFCZ sends money via bank transfer to an organised infrastructure in Zambia. The money is carefully managed at a local level and goods are sourced locally. This helps to create a sustainable local economy, as well as providing direct aid to needy areas, and therefore helps the people in the region to become more self-sufficient.

Finally, because FFCZ is a small charity, we can see that the funds we donate are making a real difference to the everyday lives of the people in Zambia. As we watch FFCZ's projects develop, we know that we have helped them to do so.

How does the money that we donate to FFCZ change lives?

FFCZ helps the neediest children in some of the most deprived townships of Zambia, and is also working to improve the areas in which they live and provide them with better prospects for the future.

One of the projects that our donations to Families For Children Zambia help to fund is the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) project, part of a larger Chitsime project (run by the St Lawrence Community Centre). The Chitsime project is based in the Misisi compound, a township in Zambia's capital city, Lusaka.

There is a high level of unemployment in the area, and many of the people are affected by HIV and AIDS, so many families have to survive without regular incomes and there is a large number of orphans.

The OVC project, which is staffed by volunteers, many of whom are from the compound itself, helps to identify which households are in need of the most help, and provides them with practical support in the form of food, clothing or help with school fees and medical expenses.
